Making homemade Funfetti cinnamon rolls requires more effort than popping open a can of dough from your fridge, but you won’t regret spending extra time on these delicious buns.
Ingredients
Buns
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy both work well)
- 1 pkt instant yeast
- 2 cups Funfetti cake mix
- 1 & ¾ cups all-purpose flour, divided
- 1 egg
- ½ tsp salt
Filling
- 3 Tbsp butter, softened
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup Funfetti cake mix
- ½ tsp cinnamon
Glaze
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 Tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Sprinkles
Instructions
- Combine butter and milk in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave on high for approximately 1 minute. Stir well, then microwave the mixture in 20-second intervals until the butter is fully melted. You want the mixture to be warm, not hot, or the milk will curdle.
- Combine milk mixture and yeast, then whisk to combine. Add the Funfetti cake mix, 1 & 1/2 cups flour, salt, and egg. Mix until a ball forms, then place a damp cloth over the bowl for 10 minutes.
- Sprinkle flour on a table or tray lined with wax or parchment paper, then flour a rolling pin. Roll the dough out into a rectangle, then spread the surface of the dough with the very soft butter. In a smaller bowl, combine the brown sugar, Funfetti mix, and cinnamon with a fork to blend. Spread this mixture over the flattened dough.
- Roll the dough tightly into a log, then use dental floss to slice it into circles. Place on pans, then cover the pans with damp towels for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Bake Funfetti cinnamon rolls for 15 to 20 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Top with glaze and sprinkles.
