Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup of low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup of hoisin sauce
  • 3 tbsp of ketchup
  • 3 tbsp of honey
  • 2 tsp of garlic (minced)
  • 2 tsp of ginger (grated and peeled)
  • 1 tsp of dark sesame oil
  • 1/2 tsp of five-spice powder
  • 2 lb. of pork shoulder (boneless and trimmed)
  • 1/2 cup of chicken broth (fat-free and low-sodium)

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, hoison sauce, ketchup, honey, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and five-spice powder.
  2. Use a whisk to stir the ingredients and pour them in a plastic Ziploc bag.
  3. Place the pork into the bag and marinate it in the fridge for about 2 hours, turning the bag occasionally.
  4. Place the marinade and the pork in a slow cooker, cover it, and cook it on low for about 8 hours.
  5. Take out the pork from the slow cooker, place it on a cutting board, and cover it with aluminum foil.
  6. Pour broth into the slow cooker, cover it, and cook on low for about 30 minutes.
  7. Use two fork to shred the forks, pour sauce over the dish, and serve.
