Red velvet cake has a reputation for being an elegant, beautiful cake. You can often find it on the dessert menu at restaurants.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of fine salt
  • 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 cups of vegetable oil
  • 1 cup of buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons of red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon of white distilled vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Cream cheese frosting (see below)
  • Crushed pecans, for garnish

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 1 pound of cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups of sifted confectioner’s sugar
  • 2 sticks of unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and oil three 9-inch cake pans.
  2. Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder in a large bowl. In another large bowl, whisk together oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients, and mix until batter is smooth. Pour into cake pans and bake for approximately 30 minutes.
  4. Frost with cream cheese frosting.
