Red velvet cake has a reputation for being an elegant, beautiful cake. You can often find it on the dessert menu at restaurants.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1 teaspoon of fine salt
- 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 cups of vegetable oil
- 1 cup of buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons of red food coloring
- 1 teaspoon of white distilled vinegar
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- Cream cheese frosting (see below)
- Crushed pecans, for garnish
Cream Cheese Frosting
- 1 pound of cream cheese, softened
- 4 cups of sifted confectioner’s sugar
- 2 sticks of unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and oil three 9-inch cake pans.
- Combine flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder in a large bowl. In another large bowl, whisk together oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients, and mix until batter is smooth. Pour into cake pans and bake for approximately 30 minutes.
- Frost with cream cheese frosting.
